What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments available. It is both a time and cost-effective way to easily enhance your smile, and can leave patients feeling so much more confident and happy about their smile and appearance.
How does it work?
Using a teeth whitening agent, such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, teeth whitening works to whiten the teeth by removing surface staining and penetrating the enamel to breakdown the discoloured molecules there.
Why do I have discoloured teeth?
Discolouration of the teeth is perfectly natural and normal. Many patients experience discoloration as part of ageing with some lifestyle factors playing a part too. The consumption of coloured foods, red wine, tea and coffee can all lead to teeth staining, for example, while smoking often leads to discoloured teeth. For some patients, it might simply be genetics.
How much whiter will my teeth be?
This is hard to predict and varies widely between patients. It will depend on the colour of the teeth at the start of the treatment and some of the lifestyle factors mentioned above.
How long will the effects of the treatment last?
This can vary from patient to patient too, as well as which treatment you choose to whiten your teeth with. Results tend to last anywhere between a few months and up to three years but will depend on lifestyle and diet factors. There is a variety of ways in which you can prolong and maintain the treatment, however, including special toothpaste and tooth serums. We’re also able to provide top-up treatments to patients who want them.
